Principal's News

Dear Families,

Our Athletics Day on Tuesday was a success, despite the threat of rain hanging over us for most of the day! You never know which way these things will go when you make the call to go ahead, but thankfully our students were able to enjoy participating in all events, with a good crowd looking on for support. McAuley were the overall winners on the day, but Gleeson gave it their best! It was fantastic to witness the sportmanship and the encouragement that students offered to each other. From our age-group champions, there are a small number who will move on to the district Mini-Olympics next week. Athletics Day is a busy one, with so much going on, so we would especially like to acknowledge all those parents and grandparents who put their hand up to assist with running events or cooking and serving the BBQ – we couldn’t have done it without you!

Our Father’s Day Breakfast is next Friday, with egg and bacon rolls and activities from 8.30am until 10am! If you haven’t already ordered breakfast for yourself and your kids, please get onto CDF Pay and do so as soon as possible! If you are having issues, give the office a call and we can help you out. The students are really looking forward to seeing their dads or special friends here next week! Our short assembly in the afternoon (with a Father’s Day theme) will be at 2.45pm for those who are able to join us.

As you know, building resilience in our students is a big focus at OLSH and we endeavour to do this in many ways in regard to learning, friendships and general ups and downs faced by children each day. More often than not, when students say they are unwell, they usually are - but there are times when students could possibly push through with a bit of gentle distraction from teachers! Sending children to school and telling them that you will come and get them if they still feel sick during the day means that you are bound to get a call at some point (who wouldn’t want to spend the day at home)? If you are unsure whether your child really is unwell, we recommend you do your best to get them here, then send a message to teachers or the office to say you are happy to come if needed. That will prevent you from picking up a child who is not particularly sick and who could most likely have seen out the day!

Thanks to those families who have returned permission slips, paid deposits and filled in medical information for upcoming camps. It is much appreciated and helps us with organisational requirements. We are aware that there are a lot of forms going home at the moment, but unfortuantely this is all part of compliance these days!

Have a great weekend!

Fathers Day BBQ/Celebrations: A reminder to all Dads that we will be celebrating Father's Day on Friday September 5th 2025.

Joseph was the father of Jesus and was always there to guide and support Jesus. He worked hard and provided for his family. Like Joseph, our fathers play an important role within our families. So lets make sure we gather on September 5th and celebrate these important men in our lives.

Grade 1 News

It has been wonderful to settle back into a structured week of learning after our busy swimming program. A big congratulations to all students for their effort and enthusiasm at Tuesday’s Athletics Day. Despite the rain, everyone participated with great determination and displayed excellent sportsmanship.

In Literacy, we have been learning about prepositions and how to identify them in sentences, as well as beginning to practise editing our own work. In Mathematics, our focus has been on creating addition and subtraction equations and exploring fact families. In Science, students have been learning about life cycles, with a special focus on butterflies.

A friendly reminder to continue nightly reading and spelling practice at home. Our Activity Day and school sleepover are also coming up soon, so please ensure permission has been given via PAM.

Grade 2 News

The highlight of this week was of course our school Athletics Day. I was very impressed with how all of our students participated in every event and encouraged their peers. I think everyone had an enjoyable day despite the weather!

The students have begun making their presents and cards for Father's Day and we hope to see lots of Dads for our Father's Day breakfast and activity next Friday.

Today was our last Electives session for Term Three. The students have absolutely loved these sessions and we look forward to seeing which activities are popular for next term.

Last Friday I sent home a note about the Junior Unit Activity Day and Sleepover. Please read all of the information provided carefully and make sure you have given permission on SIMON. Thank you to the parents who have volunteered to help out with dinner and/or sleeping over!

Have a great weekend!

Grade 3 News

Congratulations to all the Grade 3 students for the sportsmanship and effort you demonstrated on Tuesday!

This week in Grade 3 students have been introduced to division. We have started by focusing on dividing by 5 and 10 as we are learning to use multipication facts to help us to divide into equal groups. You might like to give your child a quiz on their 5 and 10 times tables in the car to assist them with these! We have also continued to learn about different climates in Australia and around the world.

A reminder that camp notes and deposits are due back by next Wednesday 3rd September. Thank you to those familes who have already offered to loan a tent for the students to sleep in!

We will be presenting a special Fathers Day assembly item next Friday afternoon- please note the time change due to the Fathers Day activities in the morning!

Grade 4 News

This week, our Athletics Carnival was once again a big hit! Its so good to see our students trying their best, having fun and supporting each other. This year we had an extra event where various staff members wore their favourite inflatable suits and raced in them! Very funny and it was extremely well received by our students!

This week in Civics we have been winding up our focus on Laws and Rules and imagined a hypothetical ‘lawless planet’ and the consequences this would potentially have on human kind! This generated lots of interesting discussion amongst the students. On Wednesday, students started to paint their paper mache animals and they cant wait to bring them home at the end of term!

A few reminders:

  • Please return the Grade 3/4 camp permission slip by Wednesday 3rd September along with the $50 camp deposit. Another detailed note will be sent home next week. We also need an indication of who could possibly loan a five person plus tent. Thankyou :)
  • Father’s Day breakfast takes place next Friday 5th September. Refer to newsletter for details.
  • School Disco is on Thursday 18th September.
  • End of term and footy colours day on Friday 19th September.

Have a lovely weekend everyone,

Julie Phelan
