Student Leader News
Friday Fun Days
This term Student Leaders have started Friday Fun Days with fortnightly fun activities at lunchtime. So far the Leaders have held basketball and netball clinics for students in Prep-Grade 3; played with the rainbow parachute (always a favourite!!) and made bookmarks. It has been wonderful to see our Student Leaders share their interests and skills with the wider student community while having lots of fun!

Recycle Bottles & Cans
The Student Leaders have organized an account for donated bottles and cans. If you have refundable bottles and cans, you can recycle them at any CDS container refund depots in Mildura and scan the barcode below. Grade 1 News
Another exciting and productive week in Grade 1!
In Literacy, we explored “illegal letters”—those tricky letters that never appear at the end of English words. The students did a fantastic job and created a colourful and informative classroom display to showcase their learning.
We also wrote detailed recounts of our excursion to Wentworth last week, capturing our favourite moments and practising our sequencing skills.
In Maths, we've been focusing on place value and practising how to order numbers from largest to smallest with confidence.
As we approach the end of term, please remember to return all library books by next week. Thank you for your support!

Grade 2 News
It was lovely to have a 'normal' full week of school this week!
Lots of learning happened, here are some of the concepts we covered.
Literacy: This week we continued to learn about complex sentences. The students identified the subordinate (dependent) and independent clause in sentences. They were given subordinate clauses and asked to add an independent clause to complete the sentence.
Mathematics: The main concept this week was using our knowledge of doubles and 'friends to ten' to help us mentally calculate addition and subtraction questions. For example, when solving 20 +23, we can think 20+20+3 and when solving 19+4 we can think 20+3 by bridging to the nearest ten. The students showed some great skills and perseverance when applying these strategies!
RE: In RE the students have been reflecting on the question; What are your gifts and how might you use them to participate in the life of our community or school to make it even better?
This might be a great conversation starter for the dinner table!
Electives: These were held on Wednesday this week as I am away today. My Art group painted their pottery creations and whilst we had a few mishaps, everyone is enjoying the process and learning a lot! I will share some photos of our creations next week.
Have a lovely weekend!
Lisa

Grade 3 News
This week, we’ve continued exploring what life was like in Australia during the 1800s. The students have really enjoyed stepping back in time through creative writing, imagining the daily routines, challenges, and adventures of people from the past.
In Maths, we’ve been building our confidence with fractions—learning how to draw, name, and recognise them in everyday contexts. To keep practising at home, try asking your child to cut fruit, sandwiches, or pizza into halves, quarters, or eighths and name the fractions they see.
Thank you for your support in helping your child get back into the rhythm of daily reading and homework.
Finally, a reminder that I'm available for parent teacher meetings on Monday 30th June and Tuesday 1st July. Please log into Simon to make a booking.
Have a lovely weekend!

Grade 4 News
This week we have been learning how to identify Topic Sentences and Supporting Details in the paragraphs that we write. To some students this comes naturally but others have to really work hard at it. Well done to everyone for doing your best. We have also been looking at ECOSYSTEMS and how important they are for providing the necessary food and energy sources for all living organisms. This week we also completed a collage poster which highlighted our IDENTITY and included the things that make us unique and special.
The girls in Grade Four have continued to work with Jo on a Tuesday as part of the MESH program. MESH stands for Mental, Emotional, Social & Spiritual Health. It is a wellbeing program designed to support young girls in developing confidence, emotional resilience, and positive relationships. If you have any questions or would like to know more about the program, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with Jo (jfinlayson@olshmerbein.catholic.edu.au).
Congratulations to Oscar, who this week received his pen licence! Well done Oscar!
For ART next week, could all students please bring to school two sticks - approximately the length of a ruler and as thick as a little finger. Thanks!
Enjoy your weekend!
Julie

Grade 5 News
This week in Grade Five, we have had a change of pace in Mathematics and have been learning about triangles and angles. In History, we have continued exploring the effects of the gold rush on Australian immigration and the Eureka Stockade. Students have also been making connections to how these events influenced the development of democracy in Australia.
Next week will see another visit from Police Officer Joe. These sessions are always very informative. We are also taking part in the Author Talks through the Australian State Library, with one of the featured authors being Anh Do.
