Principal's News
Dear Families,
It was great to see so many of our dads at school today enjoying their egg and bacon breakfast with their children, as well as a game or two outside afterwards! Our Multipurpose Room was filled with conversation and faces we often don’t get to see at school, which was fantastic! I don’t think I’ve seen such a crowd on the oval after breakfast before! At our assembly, Grade 3/4L entertained us with some good old dad jokes (the Preps thought they were very funny!) and a song. Thank you to all the staff who spent time preparing, cooking and serving the breaky this morning and to Allison Mazza for coming along to help. We sincerely hope that all our dads and other father figures in our lives have a relaxing time on your special day this Sunday.
The next activity on our calendar is our Athletics Day on Tuesday, 10th September. As mentioned previously, we are off to the Aerodrome Ovals for this event for the first time in our OLSH history and we hope this will be a positive change for our day. Thank you to those families who have offered to assist on the day – this will be very helpful to the teachers as they move around the various events. Helpers at the BBQ are also welcome, as there will be quite a few sausages to cook and serve! Contact the school or Mr. Breewel if you can help. A bonus for parents will be a coffee van, organised by Mrs. Garraway, which will be at the ovals for most of the morning! Remember if you would like a sausage on the day, orders must be sent to school on the slip provided in the newsletter.
Over the next few weeks there are a number of activities and excursions coming up, so it’s important to keep referring to the list of dates that was sent out via Seesaw last week. An updated version is in today’s newsletter. The second last week of term (Week 9) is particularly busy, so get the dates into your diary now!
We are beginning to make plans for staffing in 2025 and part of this planning process involves us working with the predicted number of enrolments for next year. We currently have room in our Prep class for 2025, so if you are aware of anyone who is looking to enroll their child at OLSH, please encourage them to contact the school as soon as possible. Families who are leaving the area next year are also asked to let the office know of your plans so that numbers can be altered.
I hope that all our OLSH Dads, in particular, are spoiled on Sunday and that your children show you just how much they appreciate you! Have a great weekend!
Narelle Gallagher

OLSH Athletics Day - 10th Sept
Please refer to the information & flyers below
Our annual Athletics Day will be held on Tuesday September 10th at the Mildura Little Athletics Club. All children will need to be dropped off between 8.30am and 8:45am by their parents. Buses will bring the children back to school where they can be collected at the end of the day.
We ask that parents complete the consent on SIMON Everywhere. There are questions regarding assistance from parents on the day. If you have any questions please contact Michael Breewel at mbreewel@olshmerbein.catholic.edu.au or ring the school office on 50 252 258.
We will have some assistance from children from Merbein P-10 College but we need parental help for various activities such as:
- Running athletic events - High jump, long jump, vortex throw, discus, shot put and running events.
- Cooking the BBQ
- Setting up and packing up.
The Athletics day will not run smoothly without the assistance of parents. Coming along to help out is a grat way to get involved and also watch your kids participate!
Sunray Warriors - 11th Sept
Our students have been invited to take part in the Sunray Warriors - An Environmental Adventure! Students will enjoy hands on interactive activities, all with an environmental focus. Students will need to be dressed in their sports uniform, bring a snack in a brown paper bag, drink bottle and hats for the day. Students will travel by bus to and from Mildura South Sporting Precinct.
PLEASE REMEMBER TO FILL OUT THE PERMISSION ON PAM AND PAY YOUR MONEY FOR THE BUS ($5.00 PER CHILD OR $10.00 PER FAMILY OF 2 CHILDREN OR MORE).

A Special Report: Celebrating Father’s Day
For many years now, the role of fathers has changed and evolved. During the industrial revolution, fathers were often considered detached and distant due to working long hours in factories. However, today things have changed dramatically with many dads being celebrated for being sensitive, caring and more hands-on.
Recent studies have shown that children benefit greatly from having fathers who are present and interacting in everyday activities. This has transformed the understanding of how fathers shape children’s lives from the start, challenging conventional ideas of parenthood and gender.
Research also suggests that fathers influence their sons and daughters in different ways, which is especially true during their transition to adolescence. Engaging in regular physical activities can play a key role in influencing children to learn self-control, face challenges, regulate emotions and take manageable risks.
In this Special Report, fathers will learn about the positive impact they can have on their child’s mental health and wellbeing, whilst also ensuring they indulge in a little self-care.
We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this Special Report, and as always, we welcome your feedback.
If you do have any concerns about the wellbeing of your child, please contact the school for further information or seek medical or professional help.

Grade 1 News
After a busy week last week with swimming, it has been great to be back in the classroom. Students have been working very hard getting back into routine and learning new concepts. It was great to see so many dads here for the Father's Day breakfast, the kids enjoyed showing their dads the work they have completed in class.
In Mathematics we have been focusing on division, students have learnt how to split up numbers into 2 or 4 groups.
In Literacy we have learnt about adding "ing", we made an impressive list of all the "ing" words we found in our readers.
I have been very impressed with everyone's progression with their reading. It is great to see how the hard work at school and at home is paying off.

This week in Science we made balloon rockets and talked about the forces that were making the rocket move and slow down. We had some great discussion about why some rockets were not moving as quickly as others!

Grade 6 News
This week we continued our new Science unit on the states of matter by doing some more experiments. We combined a solid (coffee grounds, milo, flour, salt or sprinkles) with a liquid (water, oil, vinegar or milk) to see if they became a solution or a suspension. We then filtered one of our solutions and one of our suspensions to observe if they would separate.
We watched the movie 'Holes' and discussed the differences and similarities between the book and the movie, then decided which we preferred the most. Some fantastic comparisons and ideas were raised. We have now started our new class novel, 'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe'.
Please continue to remind and support your child in completing their homework, which is to be handed in on Mondays along with their home reading.
Wishing all fathers a fantastic Father's Day!
Have a great weekend!
