22 - 19th July, 2024 - Term 3, Week 1
Principal's News
Dear Families,
Welcome back, everyone! It has been a wet start to the week and a busy start to the term. Today, the staff participated in the second Structured Literacy day. This day focused on the second hour of the literacy block, which is writing. It emphasized the use of the Hochman Method (The Writing Revolution), a strategy already in use at OLSH and teachers have received training. The day demonstrated how staff can apply their existing knowledge as part of the Structured Literacy process.
This week also marks the beginning of the next round of DIBELS testing, where the data will be used to track students' progress and develop strategies to help all students improve.
Next week, we welcome back Mrs. Gallagher from her travels on Tuesday.
Parent-teacher interviews will be held on Monday and Tuesday next week. If you have not scheduled a time, please log onto SIMON and make an appointment. We are also starting our Homeless Awareness activities. For Grades Three to Six, we have guest speakers from MASP speaking to the students on Monday afternoon. Grades Prep to Two will be doing activities in their classrooms throughout the week. All activities are designed to be age-appropriate. This will be followed by several weeks of fundraising activities organised by the student leaders. Information about these activities will be provided next week. Knowledge and awareness of issues such as these are a strong part of Catholic social teaching and our identity as a Catholic school.
The NAPLAN results are back. The Parent-teacher interviews will be a great time to collect these.

It has been lovely to have all our students return from holidays, happy and excited to be back!
We have jumped straight into learning some new topics this week.
Mathematics: We have be looking at flips, slides and turns using 2D shapes and have now moved onto place value.
Writing: We are learning about topic sentences and supporting details in paragraphs and the students have written some supporting details for different topic sentences.
Geography: Yesterday the students learnt about Australia's place in the world and the different continents. They were surprised to learn that some of the continents used to be joined but separated over time!
Science: This term we will be learning about 'forces' and how they act on objects.
Reminders:
*Please remember to book in for a PT interview for next week.
*SSG meetings- if your child is on an ILP you will be able to book a SSG meeting instead of a PT interview. These take place in Week 3. If your child is on an ILP at QDTP level you will need to book a PT interview. Please email or SeeSaw me if you are not sure.

Grade Five News
It's been a positive and productive week in Grade 5 this week. Some students have been a little tired but everyone is doing their best. The high point for me was that we had 100% of students read each night this week. This is so good for the student's reading development.
In literacy we are reading and writing to learn about how Australian people, places and culture are similar or different to Europe and North America. We have looked at maps of continents and countries and discussed why Australia has many similarities with Europe and North America. Literacy and Geography will be studied together for the first half of the term.
In Maths we had fun looking at simple financial plans as well as addition and subtraction number patterns. This term we will continue to work on our number facts starting with the 6 times tables. Regular practice at home is very beneficial.
I'm looking forward to meeting many of you at next week's parent teacher meetings and sharing the progress your child has made this year so far.

-Our assembly will finally take place next Friday, 26 th of July. So if you are able to come along, it will be great to see you there!
